Transparency of Technology in the Public Realm
Coding Cities, Media Evolution
Helpful Places · November 2023
During my Malmö Residency, I spoke at Coding Cities, an evening at Media Evolution about technology and the public realm. Martin Thörnkvist introduced it, and I shared the stage with Violet Whitney of Spatial Pixel (Beyond the Screen) and Johan Linåker (Municipal Collaboration on Open-Source Software).
My talk was about data-collecting technology in public space, and the mistrust that grows when people can't tell what it is, who runs it, or what it does with their data. I presented Digital Trust for Places and Routines (DTPR), the open source visual language we steward at Helpful Places. I covered how research and taxonomy became signage guidelines, and pilots from Sydney Olympic Park during the Women's World Cup to Angers, France.
