NYC Planning Labs

Product lead and developer at the NYC Department of City Planning

January 2017

From 2017 to 2019 I worked at NYC Planning Labs, the product team inside the NYC Department of City Planning, first as product lead and then as product manager and developer.

  • I envisioned, prototyped, and led the adoption of an application that automates parts of New York City's environmental impact analysis. It led to an agency initiative to reform environmental review, and I hired three technical team members to build it.
  • I drafted the agency's digital product plan, arguing for product thinking and product management in an organization used to thinking in projects, and helped introduce modern software stacks, agile processes, and roadmaps centered on user research.
  • At different times I was product manager or lead full stack developer on a number of digital products, working heavily with Mapbox GL, PostGIS, Ruby, and Ember.js.

I presented the team's work at Code for America Summit, NYC School of Data, NYC Open Data Week, Future Cities Catapult's PlanTech Week, and TICTeC Local London.
